Statement from ACCI Executive Chairman, Peter Hood

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Australia’s largest and most representative business organisation, is very pleased to announce the appointment of Kate Carnell AO to the position of Chief Executive Officer.

Kate will take up the Canberra based appointment in May.

"The appointment has been made following a comprehensive recruitment process conducted by the ACCI Board and the fact that ACCI has secured such a high-calibre and experienced leader is a testament to ACCI’s standing", said ACCI Executive Chairman Peter Hood.

"Kate’s first-hand small business background, top-level political leadership and industry association skills will be instrumental to ACCI’s advocacy as the voice of Australian business."

"Kate is keen to engage with all our Chamber and Industry Association members and other stakeholders as we work lockstep in the pursuit of our mission to make Australia a world class place to do business", said Mr Hood.

Kate is well known and respected in the not-for-profit and business communities having served two years as CEO of beyondblue and previously four years as CEO of the Australian Food and Grocery Council.

Kate began her professional life as a Pharmacist. She owned and managed a pharmacy for some 20 years, was the inaugural chair of the ACT Branch of the Australian Pharmacy Guild and went on to become National Vice-President of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia.

Kate served as Chief Minister of the ACT from 1995 to 2000. She brings to the Chief Executive Officer role deep government experience and knowledge of the cabinet decision making process that will assist in ACCI’s advocacy on behalf of members.

Kate was honoured on Australia Day 2006 with an Officer of the Order of Australia for her services to community through contributions to economic development and support for the business sector, knowledge industries, the medical sector and medical technology advances.
