After more than a decade behind closed doors, Te Whare Whakarauika the Wellington Town Hall is preparing to reopen in February 2027, marking the return of one of Wellington’s most iconic cultural landmarks. Te Whare Whakarauika will rejoin the Venues Wellington portfolio, offering the perfect setting for conferences, award ceremonies, and significant corporate and public occasions, with a capacity for gala dinners of up to 400 guests and cocktail receptions of up to 1,100.

Beloved civic landmark

Closed in 2013, the building is undergoing an extensive multi‑year redevelopment to secure its future and elevate its role in the heart of Wellington’s arts and events landscape.

The strengthening work has been among the most complex undertaken in the city. Beneath its heritage exterior lies an entirely new foundation structure and modern services, designed to elevate the experience for performers, audiences, and event organisers alike. With the majority of seismic strengthening now complete, attention is shifting to restoration and fit‑out.

A premier destination for music and performance

When the doors reopen, the venue will emerge as a state‑of‑the‑art musical, recording, and performance setting. It will offer upgraded rehearsal and performance spaces and become a national centre of musical excellence as home to the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington’s New Zealand School of Music – Te Kōkī.

The legendary auditorium – long celebrated for its world‑class acoustics – will continue to perform at an international level, making it one of the most desirable spaces for symphonic, choral, and contemporary performance. The refurbished Town Hall organ will also return as a centrepiece, creating new opportunities for concerts, education, and cross‑disciplinary collaboration.

The redevelopment represents not just preservation, but renewal – strengthening the cultural heartbeat of the capital for decades to come.
