Partner News: Lasercraft Australia’s Environmental Initiative: Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Lasercraft Australia, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities, is making a significant impact through its environmental initiatives. Since 1987, the organisation has provided valuable employment opportunities and skill development on the Central Coast, specialising in corporate awards and community access programs.

A key element of Lasercraft’s sustainability efforts involves the use of camphor laurel timber. Originally planted in Australia for its fast growth and shade, camphor laurel has become a major environmental weed, causing land degradation and threatening biodiversity, including koala habitats. To combat this issue, Lasercraft incorporates salvaged camphor laurel into its products, with the aim to restoring native ecosystems.

Camphor laurel’s unique dark grain and yellow base make it a distinctive choice for corporate recognition awards, while its use helps mitigate the environmental impact of this invasive species. By choosing this timber, Lasercraft not only aids in ecological rehabilitation but also offers supported employees meaningful work experiences.

Although camphor laurel can provide habitat for some plants and animals, due to its adverse impacts on Australian biodiversity and contribution to land degradation, control programs advocate for the carefully managed, integrated removal of camphor laurel and replacement with native trees. These control programs have been effective in the regeneration of many areas of subtropical rainforest. In areas once dominated by exotic camphor laurel trees, native trees are beginning to thrive once again.

“Using camphor laurel is about turning an environmental challenge into a positive impact,” says Lasercraft’s General Manager Peter Britton. “It allows us to contribute to the environment while providing valuable job skills to our team.”
