Partner News | 92% of directors use AI for board work. 6% of boards govern it.

The 2026 Board Effectiveness Survey, released by OnBoard, asked 531 governance professionals across six industries how AI has entered their board process. In the past six months, 92% of directors used AI for board work, up from 69% a year earlier. Only 6% sit on a board with an enforced policy covering that use.

For association and not-for-profit boards the gap tends to be wider. Directors are often member-elected volunteers working from personal devices and personal AI accounts. Board papers, draft budgets and strategy documents are being pasted into ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini, leaving no record of what was used, or which version of a document a decision rested on. The secretariat has no visibility of it, and no policy to produce when a member, auditor or regulator asks.

The report includes a five-tier maturity self-assessment a board can complete in one meeting, a breakdown of which directors carry the most exposure and the least protection, and four actions to take this quarter, starting with the policy conversation.

The research is global, but the questions it raises are the ones Australian association boards already answer to: privacy, record-keeping, and evidencing how a decision was reached.
