National Fire Industry Association appoints new CEO

The National Fire Industry Association, Australia (NFIA) Board has announced the appointment of Joe Smith as its new Chief Executive Officer.

The NFIA is a peak association operating in the fire protection sector in Australia, representing employers, suppliers and industry stakeholders that work at the frontline of fire protection. According to the NFIA, over 80 per cent of the commercial fire protection work undertaken in Australia is completed by its members.

NFIA President Andrew Hickman said Smith – who commenced his role as NFIA Chief Executive Officer on 1 July 2023 – was chosen after an extensive, rigorous and extremely competitive selection process.

“Joe was the outstanding choice for the role; he brings energy and leadership to the officer team alongside experience with the association and the industry,” said Hickman.

“This appointment creates a new opportunity for the NFIA, and the board is looking forward to working with Joe to ensure our Strategic Plan is implemented and the association continues to grow and improve our industry.”

Smith has held a number of roles in associations across Australia including at the Australian Dental Association and the Law Society of NSW. He also completed his Master of Business Administration shortly before joining the NFIA. An experienced all-rounder, Smith has significant national and international political experience from his time in the United Kingdom and European Union as well as a background in finance and marketing. Before Smith’s new appointment, he was the NFIA’s Acting-CEO and General Manager, having joined the association in July 2020.

“Over the last three years I have seen how much potential there is at the NFIA,” said Smith. “We have committed members; a committed board; and we are building an excellent team.”

“Now we are building on a solid base of years of advocacy work, through COVID-19, license changes and regulatory reform nationwide, that means we are better placed than ever to speak with governments about the importance of the fire protection industry.

“I am excited to keep working with our members to ensure NFIA grows and develops while continuing to deliver for our members, for our industry and for the benefit of the Australian built environment.”
