Bringing Associations Together To Boost Performance

High performing Committees support good governance

Evaluating Board performance is often a high priority for associations, as it should be, but how good are your committees?

Committees can be important stepping stones to Board nomination but only if members are enhancing their skills and gaining an understanding of good governance processes. There is often investment in training of directors, but this can be just as important for committee members and their chairs.

Whether a board committee or advisory committee they may be very effective and assist with important work in advancing the Strategic Plan or ensuring compliance or they can be timewasting drains on resources. Poorly functioning committees can provide platforms for member ‘hobby horses’ which distract from important business.

Clear Terms of Reference, term limits, careful selection of members and chairs, good reporting processes and formal evaluation are all part of effective committee performance.

Associations Forum has developed a Committee Survey which can help to evaluate committee performance which can be followed up with an education opportunity for your committees as part of Gold membership benefits.
