Partner News: Help on hand to reduce event emissions in Wellington

Business Events Wellington has developed a suite of sustainability resources to help event organisers reduce their carbon footprints.
Resources include the comprehensive Wellington Sustainable Events Guide which provides tips on how to host an event sustainably, and a guide to Wellington venues and accommodation providers recognised for their sustainable practices.
Another resource highlights local organisations with a focus on social procurement, including Kaibosh Food Rescue, Trees That Count, and Whistling Sisters, a local craft beer brewery and restaurant which donates a portion of its profits to breast cancer research.
Business Events Wellington manager Irette Ferreira says many Wellington venues and suppliers are focusing on reducing emissions to ensure events taking place in Wellington not only have a lesser negative impact on the environment, but also increase their positive impact through local and social procurement.
“We have a responsibility to facilitate the meeting places and meaningful connections to tackle solutions to the climate crisis.”
It’s a reflection of Wellington’s reputation as a leader in the sustainability and climate action spaces.
Already the lowest carbon city per person in Australasia and named as one of the top 10 eco-cities in the world in Lonely Planet’s Sustainable Travel Handbook, the capital is on a mission to become a carbon zero city by 2050.
Wellington is also a leader in the ongoing restoration of the natural environment, and is home to Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne, the world’s first fully-fenced urban ecosanctuary. As a venue, Zealandia caters for social functions, “out-of-the-box” breakout sessions, and activities surrounded by nature while also supporting research and the city’s restoration of biodiversity.
Event organisers needing support to help make their events more sustainable can contact Business Events Wellington at businessevents@wellingtonnz.com or locate these resources on WellingtonNZ.com/meet.
