Australian Alpaca Association turns 35

The Australian Alpaca Association (AAA) proudly marked a major milestone in 2025—celebrating 35 years of supporting and advancing the alpaca industry in Australia. This anniversary was celebrated nationally during National Alpaca Week, which took place from 10 to 18 May, featuring a vibrant line-up of events across the country.
From open farms to fleece demonstrations and youth workshops, National Alpaca Week provided an opportunity for people to experience these charismatic animals up close and learn about their growing role in farming and fashion.
Australian Alpaca Association President Brett Fallon said the Week invited Aussies of all ages to discover and create a connection with the unique value of alpacas in sustainable agriculture and premium fibre production.
“Alpacas have become an integral part of Australia’s agricultural sector, with more than 160,000 recorded around the country, earning us the mantle of being home to the second highest population in the Southern Hemisphere, behind Peru,” he said.
“Our industry is thriving, and Australian alpaca breeders are internationally recognised for their knowledge and commitment to excellence; there was strong demand for our alpaca fibre, particularly in China, Europe, and New Zealand.”
“National Alpaca Week was a fantastic chance for people to engage with a thriving homegrown industry that contributes strongly to sustainable farming, fashion, and rural enterprise.”
National Alpaca Week was packed with exciting events, from open days and educational sessions to meet-and-greets and unique farm stay experiences.
In celebration of its 35th anniversary, the Australian Alpaca Association also championed its ‘Wear alpaca this winter’ campaign, encouraging everyone to discover the natural quality and luxury of alpaca fibre—whether it was a pair of cosy socks, a soft scarf or sweater—and support local alpaca farmers.
