IHEA Announces New CEO – Dr Peter Hendy
“Independent Higher Education Australia (IHEA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Peter Hendy as the new Chief Executive Officer”, stated IHEA Chair Mr Alan Finch.
“IHEA members are higher education institutions educating domestic and international students in undergraduate and postgraduate programs. IHEA’s primary purpose is to represent its members and grow the respect and recognition of independent higher education and the contribution of a diverse range of providers to Australian education and the Australian economy”, said Mr Finch.
“IHEA was founded over 20 years ago. It currently has 74 member institutions serving the needs of over 100,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.”
“Dr Peter Hendy is a professional economist and public policy expert. He been a Commissioner on the Commonwealth Grants Commission since 2017. He has been Chief Economist in the Prime Minister’s Office and at the same time was Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister on Training and Skills Development. Prior to that he was a Member of Parliament with roles as the Assistant Minister for Finance, Assistant Minister for Productivity and Assistant Cabinet Secretary in the Australian Government. He previously worked in the Middle East as an Executive Director of the Bahrain Economic Development Board. He was formerly Chief Executive of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and has had a long career in both the private and public sectors. In 2003, he was awarded a Centenary Medal for services to Australian society in business leadership.”
“Earlier in his career he was Chief of Staff to the Federal Minister for Education, Science and Training. Further he has been a member of the audit board for a major review of the Australian University Qualities Agency, the forerunner of the Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency (TEQSA). He was also a member of the CEOs committee of the former Australian National Training Authority; a member of a national review undertaken by the Training and Technical Education Advisory Committee; and a member of the Business and Industry Higher Education Council. He has also served on the advisory committee of the former Australian Education International.”
“Dr Hendy starts at IHEA this week,” Mr Finch said.
Dr Hendy said that “I am honoured to be appointed to a leadership role in the higher education sector and I am keen to engage with members and stakeholders to advance the aims of IHEA. I intend to hit the ground running.”
Mr Finch went on to say, “We wish to again take the opportunity to thank Simon Finn, the outgoing CEO, for the outstanding work he has done in steering the organisation since 2016. He has done a remarkable job in growing IHEA and made it a strong voice for independent higher education.”
