Federal Government announces new ACNC Commissioner

Dr Gary Johns has been named as the new Commissioner of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), following a formal announcement by Assistant Minister to the Treasurer, the Hon Michael Sukkar MP.

Dr Johns is a Director of the Australian Institute for Progress and an Adjunct Professor at the Queensland University of Technology Business School.

He has served as a member of the Prime Minister’s Community Business Partnership, and has wide-ranging experience in regulation, public service and policy, serving as an Associate Commissioner of the Productivity Commission and representing the electorate of Petrie in the Federal Government from 1987 to 1996. Dr Johns is also a columnist for The Australian, and has authored a number of books on charities and the not-for-profit sector.

Acting Commissioner Murray Baird has welcomed the announcement.

“The appointment of the new Commissioner will provide clarity and certainty for the ACNC,” Mr Baird said.

“We understand that Dr Johns will commence his duties as ACNC Commissioner from Monday 11 December 2017.

On behalf of the ACNC staff, we welcome Dr Johns to the ACNC and look forward to working with him.”

Mr Baird will remain a part of the ACNC’s leadership team as Assistant Commissioner, General Counsel, along with David Locke, Assistant Commissioner, Charity Services.
