Andrew Horne new President of Governance Institute

Governance Institute of Australia has elected senior corporate lawyer and governance professional Andrew Horne President effective 1 January 2017.

With over twenty-five years’ experience working in ASX listed companies in a diverse range of sectors including food and beverage, hotels, retail, residential and commercial property and agriculture, Andrew has the skills, expertise and passion to ensure that Governance Institute achieves its ambitious governance agenda to encourage greater commitment to whole-of-organisation governance and risk management to achieve responsible performance across a broad cross-section of the community.

There is more to be done to embed good governance in Australia. Increasingly, governance and risk professionals must work not only with the board but also with management to ensure that the actions and decisions of all individuals are directed at common goals.

“Governance is a whole-of-organisation issue that requires a framework linking roles, authorities and accountabilities with strategic objectives to empower good decision-making, while clarifying which matters are ‘off-limits,” Mr Horne said.

“And while there is widespread recognition in the business sector that good governance is a cornerstone for success, there is more to be done in the not-for-profit and public sectors and the wider community. I look forward to addressing this challenge with the skilled team at Governance Institute.”

Andrew said he was excited about the prospect of guiding Australia’s only truly independent peak body promoting excellence in the practice of governance saying, “I feel privileged to have this opportunity in this important organisation at this crucial time.”

Andrew will be supported in his new role by vice-presidents Warren Baillie FGIA and Rachel Rees FGIA.
