Professor David Weisbrot AM appointed Chair of Australian Press Council

The Australian Press Council has appointed Professor David Weisbrot as Chair. 

Professor Weisbrot is Emeritus Professor of Law and Honorary Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney, as well as part-time Commissioner of the NSW Law Reform Commission, Vice-President of the Australian Academy of Law, a Member of the Strategic Advisory Board of the Garvan Institute’s Centre for Clinical Genomics and a member of the National Pro Bono Resource Centre’s Advisory Board. 

Previously, Professor Weisbrot was Dean of Law and Pro-Vice Chancellor of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. 

Prior to this, Professor Weisbrot was President of the Australian Law Reform Commission for ten years and was a foundation Member of the National Health and Medical Research Council’s Human Genetics Advisory Committee. 

Professor Weisbrot has also written or edited ten books, over 200 official reports, journal articles and conference papers.

In 2003, Professor Weisbrot was awarded a Centenary Medal by the Australian Government for “services to law reform”, and in 2006 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for “service to the law in the areas of law reform, education and access to legal services, and through contributions to research, analysis and policy development on a range of matters of public interest”.
