Governance Institute Chief Executive Stepping Down

After 15 years in the top job transforming the former professional association for chartered secretaries into a governance powerhouse, Governance Institute of Australia chief executive Mr Tim Sheehy has announced he will be stepping down later this year.

“Tim has done an outstanding job steering the organisation towards recognition of the importance of governance and promoting to the broader business community the value a company secretary and governance adviser adds to an organisation,” Governance Institute president Ms Trisha Mok says.

Tim’s achievements at Governance Institute have been many and far-reaching.
He established Governance Institute as a key founding member of the ASX Corporate Governance Council and to this day remains passionate about, and committed to the work of the Council.  He has significantly enhanced the organisation’s standing as the leading independent voice on governance with key regulators and policy makers, including the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), the Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority (APRA), the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), the Attorneys-General as well as the federal department of Treasury.

Along with the Board, he also refreshed the relationship with the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators in the United Kingdom to make Governance Institute entirely independent, while still remaining part of what is now a truly democratic international federation.

Mindful of the Institute’s role as the premier educator for professionals serious about the practice of governance, Tim was instrumental in ensuring Governance Institute was an early adopter of online learning in 2003; well ahead of most other professional associations, and has ensured these qualifications are recognised by most Australian university law facilities.

He has entrenched member satisfaction levels in excess of 95 per cent renewal rates every year, which is almost unheard of for a membership organisation that is not compulsory, while creating a work environment that has encouraged staff to grow and build a better organisation.

“Tim’s contribution to Governance Institute has been truly outstanding,” Ms Mok added. “He has established this organisation as the leading independent voice for good governance in Australia and the leading advocate for a regulatory framework that ensures the integrity of the markets.”

Succession planning began last year when Tim advised the Board of his intention to step down at the end of 2015. He will continue as chief executive until a successor has been appointed and is working with the Board to ensure a smooth transition.
