Master Electricians Australia opens hotline

In the wake of the severe storms in Syney and other parts of NSW, Master Electricians Australia (MEA) has opened an emergency hotline number. The hotline is intended to help homeowners quickly and safely get their power suppliers reconnected.

The hotline number is 1300 889 198.

MEA NSW State Manager Jody McGann said many homes would need to be inspected by a license electrical contractor before the power could be reconnected.

“Homeowners who need an electrical safety inspection before their power is turned back on can call the hotline, and Master Electricians will connect them with the nearest available contractor,” Ms McGann said.“Master Electricians is working with the state’s energy utilities to meet the regulatory requirements to get the power back on as quickly as possible for affected homes."

Ms McGann also stated that the cost of the initial call out would be the responsibility of the homeowner but many insurance policies may have rebates. DIY attempts to restore power are also unwise.

“This storm has been traumatic for many thousands of families. But it would be unthinkably worse to turn a trauma into a tragedy simply for the sake of saving a few dollars. Make sure you do the right thing – get your circuits and appliances tested before turning the power back on.”
