Integration of national mining representative groups

Statement from Andrew Michelmore, Chairman - Minerals Council of Australia and Ross Willims, Chairman - Australian Coal Association

Representation of the mining industry nationally is to be streamlined through the integration of the Australian Coal Association (ACA) with the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA).

The decision to integrate the two organisations has been taken by member companies to ensure the industry is well positioned for the future. The move will enhance the minerals industry’s representation through a strong and united voice for the minerals sector on national policy.

The integrated entity will ensure the mining industry has a clear voice in national policy debates on the economy, climate change management, energy, low emissions technologies, regulatory reform and project approvals.

The ACA has had a long standing collaborative relationship with the MCA and the decision to integrate the two bodies will build on that partnership for the benefit of the mining industry.

The MCA Secretariat will be expanded to ensure the coal industry is well represented. This will include the transfer of some staff to the MCA.

Ross Willims, Chairman of the Australian Coal Association, paid tribute to the outgoing ACA CEO Dr Nikki Williams and the ACA team.

“Nikki brought great passion, commitment and drive, together with deep experience, to the ACA role and is thanked for her service to this critical industry. Nikki’s advocacy skills have delivered on an important strategic agenda for the industry and is leaving with our best wishes for the future” Mr Willims said.

The ACA’s Coal 21 Fund (ACALET) will remain a separate company and will continue to drive the coal industry’s practical commitment to the development of low emissions technology.
The integration is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
